We get it—luxury vinyl flooring looks easy to install (and hey, it totally can be). But whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or calling in a pro, getting the installation right is everything.
That’s why we tapped our own flooring expert Andy McWilliams, DuraDecor’s Technical Manager and former installer with years of hands-on experience, for the real talk on what matters most when hiring an installer.
Because here’s the deal: Many product issues we see? They aren’t about the flooring—they’re about the install.
So if you’re skipping the DIY route, make sure your pro is actually a pro. Here are Andy’s must-know tips:
Check the Credentials
Don’t just go with the first name that pops up on Facebook. Look for installers certified by trusted organizations like:
- CFI (International Certified Flooring Installers Association)
- NAFCT (National Association of Floorcovering Technicians)
These pros have been through legit training and are up to date on industry standards.
License + Insurance = Non-Negotiables
A licensed installer in your area is your safest bet—and many directories prioritize licensed pros first. Make sure they also carry proper insurance, so you’re protected in case anything goes sideways.
Bonus tip: Be cautious of “too good to be true” deals from unverified sources or neighborhood forums.
Experience > Handyman
Sure, your cousin’s friend might have done a few floors… but you want someone who specializes in flooring. Ask how long they’ve been installing vinyl plank, and what brands and types they’re most familiar with.
Not All Clicks Are Created Equal
Luxury vinyl plank may be known for its easy click-and-lock install, but here’s a pro tip: not every locking system works the same way.
Some products use angle-angle mechanisms, others feature angle-drop designs or a combination of the two—and some use push-lock or tap-angle systems. These differences matter: the angle, force, and technique needed to properly lock planks in place can vary by brand and product line.
That’s why it’s so important for your installer to read the installation guide for your specific flooring—not just assume they know the method. Installing it the wrong way can cause damage, uneven seams, or even void your warranty.

See the Receipts (a.k.a. Past Work)
Ask for photos of previous installs, read recent reviews, and don’t be shy about asking for references. A good installer will be proud to show off their work.
Understand the Warranty
Pro tip: Many warranties can actually be voided if the flooring isn’t installed to spec. Make sure your installer knows the product—and ask about warranties on both the labor and the materials.
Get Clear on Process & Timeline
Ask about:
